United States: You don’t need a thermometer to feel it — this New Jersey summer has been relentless. With four full-blown heat waves already behind us and another hot spell gearing up, it’s been anything but a mild season.
We’ve had multiple 100-degree scorchers — and that’s just the air temperature, not even counting the heavy, sticky humidity that’s come along with it. And now, another round of punishing heat is barreling our way, powered by a massive heat dome creeping up from the southern US, as per nj.com.
Blistering Numbers Stack Up
Even without peeking at the data, the sweat-soaked shirts and heat advisories speak volumes. But for those wanting the proof, here are some eye-openers:
- In Newark, where an average summer brings about 15 days at or above 90°F in June and July, the tally has already surged to 22 — and July isn’t over yet. By Sunday afternoon, the mercury was flirting with 90 again, threatening to push that count to 23.
- Atlantic City, which usually logs 12 days of 90-degree heat by this point, is already at 16 days.
- Trenton typically hits 12 such days by now, and it has notched 10 so far. But with 10 days left in July, it’s likely to hit — or pass — its average.
And more heat is in sight.
Another Heat Wave Incoming
After a short break of cooler, breathable air, things are about to crank up again. Meteorologists from AccuWeather and the National Weather Service are sounding the alarm for another oppressive stretch of heat and humidity, kicking off this Thursday and extending through Saturday.
Friday is shaping up to be the peak of the sizzle, with upper 90s forecasted in many parts of the state.
While we’re not expecting triple-digit temperatures this week, we’ve already had more than our fair share.
100 Degrees and Beyond
Some towns have already crossed the century mark multiple times:
- Newark hit 101°F on June 23, 103°F on June 24, 101°F again on June 25, and 100°F on July 8.
- Atlantic City didn’t lag far behind, clocking in at 102°F on both June 24 and June 25.
- Trenton, though not quite hitting the 100-degree club yet, came dangerously close with a 98°F reading on June 24.
A Long, Sweltering Road Ahead
With weeks of summer still ahead, New Jersey isn’t done sweating yet. The numbers show a clear trend — this season has broken the mold, according to nj.com.
And if the heat dome returns again (as it’s expected to), we may be in for even more record-challenging days and relentless humidity.
So stay cool, stay safe — and don’t pack away the fans just yet.
