Tsunami From 8.8 Russian Quake Hits Hawaii, California, and Alaska

Pacific tsunami from 8.8 earthquake off Russia strikes US coastlines, triggering warnings in Hawaii, Alaska, California, and more.

United States: Walls of water swept toward the US as a Pacific-wide tsunami caused by a historic underwater earthquake off the eastern coast of Russia hit communities through coastal borders to Hawaii and Alaska, and those in California, Washington, and Oregon along the West Coast.

Tsunami alerts, such as Tsunami Warnings, were raised in the region as tens of thousands of people were warned to find higher ground as a means of being safe.

It seems, though, that the disaster that was the worst is already over, as all the alerts issued in the US have been reduced to Tsunami Advisories.

Authorities warned that although the warnings were being lowered, the threat is not over yet since choppy waves on the beach and high ocean currents would still be hazardous to anyone getting into the water.

Hawaii, Haleiwa, measured the tsunami with an amplitude of 4 feet, and the amplitude of 3.9 feet occurred in Hanalei, foxweather.com reported.

It was noted that in Kahului, there was a 5.7-foot high amplitude with waves, and in Hilo, the amplitude of the waves was 4.9 feet high.

Several hours after the big earthquake jolted thousands of miles away in Hawaii, the whole state had been under a Tsunami Warning, but the alarms were lowered after that.

According to Maj. Gen. Stephen Logan, “The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) has downgraded the forecast from a Tsunami Warning to a Tsunami Advisory.”

“The PTWC continues to monitor for more data to update its forecast and for an all-clear that it may issue later on,” as Logan reported.

Nevertheless, this is not the end of the danger, and authorities have encouraged individuals to remain conscious of circumstances along the coast.

“A Tsunami Advisory means that the potential for strong currents or dangerous waves is expected or occurring for those in or near the water,” as per Logan.

“There may be flooding of beach or harbor areas. Those who have evacuated may safely return home based on county assessment and directives,” he added, as foxweather.com reported.

It is estimated that the tsunami travelled approximately 3,500 miles and travelled along the Pacific Ocean as fast as possible, requiring almost six hours to reach its point of origin, which was the magnitude 8.8 earthquake epicentre, which was just a few miles off the north eastern coast of Petropavlovsk, Russia.

The tsunami foundations did not end in the Pacific once they had hit Hawaii, but started to pound the coasts of Washington, California, and Oregon in the early hours of Wednesday, with the waves surpassing 5 feet in height.
