Senate in Fierce Combat Over Navy Ship Name as GOP Blocks Harvey Milk Tribute

United States: A sharp political standoff unfolded in the Senate on Thursday, as Republican lawmakers scuttled an effort by Democrats to contest Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s mandate to erase Harvey Milk’s name from a Navy replenishment ship.

Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) introduced a resolution seeking to rebuke the Pentagon’s directive through a unanimous consent request—a streamlined procedure for passing measures. However, the initiative was swiftly blocked by Senator Ted Budd (R-N.C.), halting the attempt in its tracks.

Harvey Milk, a trailblazing voice for LGBTQ rights and a former Navy lieutenant during the Korean conflict, etched his name in history by becoming California’s first openly gay elected official in 1977—only to be tragically assassinated the following year.

Schiff spoke from the Senate floor with visible resolve, saying,

“The Navy has historically commemorated icons of civil resistance—figures who championed the dignity and liberties of the American people—by emblazoning their names on naval vessels. But this week, it’s become clear the Secretary of Defense holds a diverging stance on whether such heroes warrant that honor.”

He pressed forward with his motion:

“I propose a modest resolution. It simply asserts that the Senate deems it significant to continue honoring civil rights pioneers through naval ship namings—and that the Department of Defense ought not to rescind these acknowledgments.”

Milk’s own service was marred by injustice. He was compelled to exit the Navy under an “other than honorable” discharge, escaping a potential court-martial solely for being gay, which the military then regarded as a criminal offense.

Senator Budd countered the resolution by anchoring his stance in the weight of seafaring tradition. “Naval heritage, and the names that adorn its ships, are more than ceremonial—they beat in the very core of every sailor’s ethos. These customs are integral to the moral fiber and valorous heartbeat of our fleet. What’s at stake isn’t political. It’s a recalibration—a return to foundational maritime tenets.”

He further emphasized that the decision would

“empower the Secretary of the Navy to include the voices of new ship plank holders—those first to serve aboard—and enable him to christen vessels in ways that reflect the deepest values of American sailors.”

Notably, the Pentagon’s decision to revoke Milk’s name came at the onset of Pride Month—an alignment Schiff openly suspected was far from incidental.
